The capabilities of a big company. The “hands-on” service of a small firm. Custom Underground, Inc. is a certified Female Business Enterprise (State of Illinois CMS Business Enterprise Program). Founded in 1977, we’ve been family-owned and operated for over 40 years and are woman-owned and managed. The Company’s initial focus was on landscaping, excavating, and concrete work. By the mid-1980s, we’d expanded to a workforce of about 80 employees and three fully-equipped construction yards in Illinois.
The Company was one of the first in Central Illinois to take advantage of new technology and machinery for underground directional drilling, which opened up opportunities for work in the utility industry. We were able to secure contracts with major telecoms and experienced significant growth as demand for underground utility construction expanded. In 1996, we incorporated and changed our name to Custom Underground, Inc. By this time, the range of services we were able to offer had also increased.

Our focus is in the Midwest including Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, and Wisconsin, servicing these areas with three permanent and fully-equipped construction yards. Our workforce of 80 to 100 employees is fully mobile.
